I work on a ship as the only woman in a crew of 90. Usually when I turn up to join a ship, the guys presume I’m a cleaner or cook. It’s usually a bit of a shock for them when they turn up for work and find out I’m actually in charge.
They can sometimes have negative ideas and low expectations of me as a female – I feel it’s part of my job to be the best I can on-board, and help to change these stereotypes.
